Yiliqi, son of a Mongol father and a Mandchurian mother, founded his first band in 1996. When T9, his second band, was founded in 1998, he was mostly interested in grunge and hardcore. In 2001, at the age of 21, he remembered the traditional Mongolian songs his father and grandmother used to sing to him when he was still a child. During this period, Yiligi often traveled to Xilinhot in Inner Mongolia, where he met the famous singing instructor Obsorung, who taught him Mongolian overtone singing. His music became more and more influenced by the traditional Mongolian sound, and it was just a matter of time before T9 broke up. As of late, Yiliqi performs in Beijing bars with the band Hanggai, interpreting only Mongolian folk music. The other musicians who join the Hanggai Band are caled Huricha, Hugejiletu und Xujingchen.
